Bronchiolitis Obliterans

Bronchiolitis Obliterans is understood as a chronic lung rejection. Its pathophysiology is characterized by severe inflammatory fibrosis affecting the bronchioles of the small respiratory airways. This irreversible process leads to progressive narrowing of the airway lumen and finally to severe infection, respiratory failure and death.

The lung function parameter FEV1 (Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second) is the clinical surrogate used for diagnosis and classification of Bronchiolitis Obliterans according to guidelines of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT).
